Check the Deck!

On February 12, 2002, the Environmental Protection Agency announced a voluntary decision by manufacturers to discontinue sales of lumber treated with chromated copper arsenate (“CCA”) and also known as CCA pressure-treated wood.

CCA is a wood preservative used for outdoor furniture, decks, landscaping and fences. While not conclusively a health hazard, the greenish brown arsenic-containing lumber is a concern to many. Manufactures in the future will use different preservatives such as copper azole or alkaline copper quarter-nary (“ACQ”) as a wood preservative.

Tip: Look for the new pressure treated wood under the name “Wolmanized Natural Select,” or “Preserve” or “Preserve Plus.”
